Peggy Mariska Sandaal

was born on the 27th of December 1978 in Paramaribo, Surinam.
When she was a year old she was flown to The Netherlands with her family and then almost a year later she was taken into a most loving adoptive family where she joined her new parents and 3 other brothers in the little Dutch town of ‘s-Gravendeel.
Peggy soon became the center point of attention of the family for even as a little child she was always dancing and singing. This didn’t go away, as she grew older and even at school you could count on her when there was a party or so and things had to have a groove.
She started taking ballet classes at 4 for 3 years and after that she got into twirling. As if her schedule wasn’t busy enough with school and twirling, she also took jazz dance on the side. With her twirling group she won a World Cup competition and continued with twirling until she was 15 years old. Later she made various choreographies for, and performed with, local dance groups throughout The Netherlands.
Thanks to a performing arts assignment in high school she had the chance to exercise a more professional level and this is where a talent scouts spotted her and asked her for shows in various clubs. Soon after, various international gigs followed where she could show her dancing and singing talents. For Peggy the European stage was a fact now.
During that time she also followed the preparatory stage of the Rotterdam Dance Academy. However, she ambitioned more. After only one year she decided she wanted to add acting as well to her already acknowledged dancing and singing skills and auditioned at the Fontys Dance Academy where she enrolled into the musical theatre programme. At the Fontys Academy followed 3 years of hard work with relentless though just teachers. This proved to be very rewarding since she did the part of “Sheila” in the school’s performance of ‘A Chorus Line’. Peggy was now ready for the business.
Right away in 2001 she landed a feature roll as “Shirley Charles” (The Black Couple) in the musical ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Already couples of months after she was asked for the supporting roll “Nehebka” in Tim Rice and Sir Elton John’s musical ‘Aida’. In this musical’s second season she also understudied the lead part ‘Aida’ and was acclaimed for her interpretation of it.
The producers were very taken with her for her talents for this time they asked her to audition for the roll of “Shenzi” (one of the hyena’s) in Disney’s The Lion King, which part she also got and has been doing successfully since 2004.
Peggy Sandaal did not limit her scope to doing musical theatre but also set her mind to feature in motion pictures. In addition to various small parts in television series she featured in the Dutch movies ‘Grimm’ (2003), by outstanding Dutch director Alex van Warmerdam and also as “The Black Soldier” in ‘Floris’ (2004), by Jean van de Velde.
Peggy also starred as one of the leading divas in the widely acclaimed Motown show ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T.’ where the audience just could not stay off their feet. Here she was introduced to the organizers of the Mas Palomas Gay Pride of Gran Canarias who noticed her and next thing she will be seen at the gala performance of the event, which will be broadcasted in over 80 countries to over 35 million viewers. This is scheduled to be on May 11th and 13th.
What Peggy’s blooming career will bring after The Lion King closes is yet to be decided on but we will most certainly keep you posted through this site.
